Translating FUNCAP

We welcome all efforts to translate FUNCAP into as many languages as possible. We aim to make translated FUNCAP versions available for download at this website. The translation process and final versions will be approved by the adminstrators of this website before being published here.

We ask, however, that anyone translating FUNCAP uses the following procedure:

  • First, translate as accurately as you can the questionnaire from English to your own language. Very good English language competence is required. It is advised to use two independent translators. They should then compare, discuss and agree on a single translated version to be used. Persons with ME/CFS and appropriate language knowledge (English and other language) should be consulted and should evaluate this translated version.
  • Two other separate translators should then independently translate this new-language, translated FUNCAP version back to English as accurately as possible. There should be no contact or communication between these two back- translators on the subject. Of course, it is important that they have not seen the original English FUNCAP version. The two back translated English versions should be very similar, but will probably not be identical.
  • Then a group of appropriately knowledgeable persons should assess the two back-translated versions and reach a consensus on adjustments to be made resulting in the the final new-language, translated  version.

This may seem cumbersome, but proper procedure is important to ensure integrity and validity. Only translations following this procedure will be made available for download on this site.
